Levaquin is used to treat infections of the lower respiratory tract, urinary tract, kidneys, skin, soft tissues, chronic bronchitis, acute sinusitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis and tuberculosis. The drug is a fluoroquinolone, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial bactericide. It blocks DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, disrupts supercoiling and cross-linking of DNA gaps, suppresses DNA synthesis, causes profound morphological changes in the cytoplasm, cell wall and bacterial membranes.

Drug Uses
Levaquin is an antibacterial drug of the fluoroquinolone group that provides high antibacterial action against most strains of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Levaquin antibacterial drug is prescribed to children aged above 6 months, adults and elderly in treatment of:
- skin and soft tissue infection (cellulitis, abscess, furuncles)
- urinary tract infection (pyelonephritis, chronic bacterial prostatitis)
- respiratory tract infection (sinusitis, chronic bronchitis, nosocomial pneumonia)
Levaquin is successfully used for post exposure prophylaxis of inhalational anthrax and therapy of plague (including septicemic and pneumonic plague).
The recommended adult dose of Levaquin to treat uncomplicated bacterial infections varies in the range of 250-500mg per day. In the treatment of complicated bacterial infections, the daily dose may require to be increased up to 750 mg of Levaquin a day. The pediatric dose of Levaquin is adjusted based on the child's age, body weight and severity of the infection.
Missed Dose
If you’ve missed a dose of Levaquin, take a tablet as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose of the antibacterial drug, do not take more than the prescribed dose of Levaquin.
More Information
During the treatment with Levaquin, the patients are recommended to comply with the prescribed dosage regimen, it will help reduce the resistance of microorganisms to Levaquin antibiotic and avoid any side effects. Since Levaquin may cause inflammatory processes in the joints or tendons (up to tendon rupture), the patients with tendinitis or tendon rupture are not recommended to use the antibiotic.

Warnings
Levaquin may cause anaphylactic reactions in some patients using this antibiotic. Levaquin Side Effects
Levaquin is not reported to cause adverse reactions very often, mainly they appear as mild to moderate.
